Understanding Headaches Through Traditional Chinese Medicine
Not every headache has the same cause.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), headaches are viewed as a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Two people with similar pain may have completely different underlying patterns, which is why treatment is always individualized
Here are some common TCM patterns associated with headaches:
šĀ Liver Yang Rising - Often associated with stress, frustration, or chronic tension.
Common symptoms may include:
⢠One-sided or temporal headaches
⢠Dizziness
⢠Irritability
⢠Neck and shoulder tightness
⢠Red eyes or elevated blood pressure
š©øĀ Qi & Blood Deficiency - When the brain doesnāt receive adequate nourishment.
Common symptoms may include:
⢠Dull, lingering headaches
⢠Fatigue
⢠Dizziness
⢠Pale complexion
⢠Symptoms that worsen after mental or physical exertion
š§ļøĀ Phlegm-Damp Accumulation - Often related to poor digestion or fluid metabolism.
Common symptoms may include:
⢠Heavy sensation in the head
⢠Brain fog
⢠Nausea
⢠Sinus congestion
⢠Feeling worse in humid weather
š©¹Ā Blood Stasis - Usually associated with chronic pain or previous injury.
Common symptoms may include:
⢠Fixed, stabbing pain
⢠Long-standing headaches
⢠Pain in the same location every time
⢠History of head or neck trauma
šĀ Stress & Muscle Tension - One of the most common patterns we see in our clinic.
Tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, jaw (TMJ), and scalp can contribute to tension headaches. Poor posture, prolonged computer use, and emotional stress may all play a role.
Why does this matter?
Because not every headache has the same cause, every treatment plan should be individualized.

At Ethereal Wellness, we combine a modern understanding of anatomy and the nervous system with Traditional Chinese Medicine to create a treatment plan based on your unique symptomsānot just the location of your pain.
